Anatomy of the Recovering Brain

Anatomy of the Recovering Brain, an extended single-movement composition (in six parts) for bass clarinet and electronics by Canadian composer Frank Horvat, performed by Dr. Kathryn Ladano.

Inspired by her personal recovery, Anatomy of the Recovering Brain is a deeply immersive one-hour musical journey. It features Kathryn Ladano on bass clarinet, supported by fixed electronics and musical cameos from Richard Burrows (vibraphone), Morgan Lovell (cello), Greg Turner (piano), and Pam Patel (soprano) — friends and fellow artists who stood by her during her darkest hours.

Masked

Masked-front-cover-768x768.jpg

The music featured on “Masked” was created spontaneously in the moment for this recording. Each piece was improvised without a plan and is meant to represent a live performance experience of Kathryn’s music. None of these tracks have been edited in any way in order to create as authentic a recording as possible. The concept of this album is largely based on Kathryn Ladano’s PhD thesis, “The Improvising Musician’s Mask: Using Musical Instruments to Build Self-Confidence and Social Skills in Collective Free Improvisation”. The results of that research significantly influenced this project. Our instruments are our masks; they allow us to express our true selves.
